News Nvidia finalizes acquisition of AI software firm Run:ai, takes software open source – company reportedly cost $700 million

They will open source it because it allows people to use more Nvidia GPUs, and also shows how to integrate the principals in other software that will allow people to use more Nvidia GPUs.

likely not.
NVIDIA's already under multiple accusations of monopolistic charges.

open source means someone "could" make it run w/ non Nvidia gpu's. (same way that guy got amd gpu to run CUDA).

Likely open source as a part of deal (understandable if the owner of the company actually cared..which is unlikely but possible) but more likely thing is NVIDIA doesn't want to risk adding another potential monopoly accusation in future which being open source would prevent happening.

Very simple principle :
My proprietary software is "closed source", which is an inconvenient according to my competitors.

Let me put this open-source software out there to fully compete with those who use open - source software (AMD) and I'll grab even more market share from AMD.

Plus, it's an entrance ticket to my ecosystem. Maybe people end up switching to nVidia and using proprietary software, further reducing AMD's and Intel's market share
